When it comes time for businesses to spread news to potential consumers, online videos are a phenomenal marketing tool. Online video consumption is greater than ever, and the Adobe Digital Index team’s online video research showed there has been a nearly 50% increase in video streams in recent years.

This statistic undoubtedly shows the importance for online videos, so let’s take a look at some upcoming video trends and opportunities.

1. Mobile: Increased Smartphone and Tablet Usage

Adobe’s research found smartphone and tablet video streaming has tripled over the past year. This figure is expected to continue its ascend to great heights as these mobile devices and data plans continue to gain in popularity.

Opportunity: Make your video mobile-friendly to gain more viewers.

2. Social Media: Social-Referring and Using Facebook and Twitter

Social Media-referred videos have a greater possibility of being watched all the way through. This is fundamental for any company looking at developing their brand. Out of all the social media sites available, Facebook is the king of content referrals; however, Twitter refers video content three times more than any other social media outlets.

Opportunity: Social sites, like Facebook and Twitter, are a great way to distribute your company’s educational videos online.

3: Ads: Ad Placement Matters.

Typically, there are three areas (beginning, middle, and end) to embed an ad in online educational video clips about your company’s products or services, but first you have to determine the ad’s purpose: click-through or impressions. Ads at the beginning of videos produce greater impressions, and ads at at the the end of videos have better click-through rates.

Opportunity: The trending ad placement spot happens to be ads placed in the middle of online video because of their high completion rates.

4: TV Everywhere: Authenticated Media Streams.

TV Everywhere, where media providers stream videos to users on authenticated streams on various consoles like blu-ray players, game consoles, etc., is a new opportunity for advertisers to gain additional reach and impressions.

Opportunity: Your target is there, so you should be too.

Great post Nora. On the social front, the launch of Twitter cards has really opened up this network to more video usage since videos can now be viewed directly inline. Definitely an area to keep an eye on moving forward. More info on twitter cards here – http://wistia.com/doc/twitter
