How to Write an Explainer Script for Online Video

Making an explainer script on your own isn’t easy, but it can be done.  One of the most important parts of this process, before you get to the production, worry about the characters, etc is writing the script.  We’ve talked about how to get started with scriptwriting, but now it’s time to get a bit more in depth.  If you’re a novice web video creator, then have no fear, we’ll help get you on the path to an awesome script.

1. State the Problem: What is the problem as a whole?  What is the big-picture problem that your product solves?  Now, think about the best way to visualize that problem.  Is it making a real-life example? Is it talking it out using arrows?  Think about how to best relay that to the viewer.

2. Tell the Solution: How does your product solve that problem?  And how can you best show this?  The important part is showing, not just telling how your product solves the problem stated.  So, do you need to show your logo? Your character happy? Dollar bills?  It’s using visual language to tell the story.

3. Explain Why you are Better: Showing your potential customers how you’re better than the competition is key.  They already know there is a problem and one solution, but maybe there are others.  Focus on why you are the best option out there, and visually depict this in a non-aggressive way (ie: don’t go after your competition too hard and sound caddy).

4. Give a Call to Action:  What are the next steps? Visuals are key here, because the viewer needs to see what to do.  Use an animated hand to show the viewer clicking on your website or going to the appropriate drop down menu to easily access your special offer.

And there you have it! If you follow these guidelines, you’re sure to have a fantastic script for your explanatory video.
